If seeing chickens raised in confined, inhumane conditions on an industrial farm disturbs you, then why would you choose to eat those chickens?
Do I really feel as though I can trust what I’ve purchased to be exactly as its labeled? No, I don’t, but I do feel more confident about “Certified Humane” than the loosely defined “organic” and “natural” meat and dairy that I was purchasing because I’ve done my research.
My mother raises hogs, they are raised on pasture and fed corn or milo depending on her crop rotation (she plants her own row crops to feed them). They are left with their mother until they are ready to be moved to the “fat hog” pen. They are never given any types of hormones, so they grow at varying rates.
I wish I could just buy my food at the grocery store and feel confident about what I’m buying, but alas, that’s not the case.
First, allow me to highlight an issue that is rarely raised. Outside of the sheer yuck factor, one very compelling reason to avoid eating commodity ground beef is that it has very little flavor. Per my earlier post, the reason is that large packers do not use flavor as a primary goal in the first place. Instead, their focus is cost control, to produce the lowest cost burgers that you’re still willing to eat.
