Style Guide

If you are writing or syndicating with Farm to Table, using these basic style and formatting standards will make your editor’s job a heck of a lot easier, and will result in faster publishing times for your work.

If you need help formatting your post, uploading photos, or other technical assistance, please email. And if you miss something, don’t worry, we’ll probably catch it!

Before Publishing

  1. Authors should add a bio to their profile before posting. Our readers really like to know more about who writes the articles they enjoy. Your bio can include HTML links to your blog, Twitter and Facebook accounts.
  2. Authors should register for a Gravatar account before posting. A photo or picture representing you on your bio page (instead of that boring, gray silhouette) will really help readers connect with you and your work.
  3. Authors syndicating posts from their own blogs should excerpt only 2-3 paragraphs of the article, then place a link to the original post at the TOP of the page (after the photo, if any).

Formatting Your Post

  1. Only ONE space is used between sentences. Please DO NOT use two spaces between sentences. Two spaces was the editorial standard before we had computers. But using two spaces between sentences on a computer simply results in uneven left justification and sloppy line breaks.
  2. Heading 3 is used for all subheadings or interview questions within an article.
  3. All photos should be a minimum of 250 pixels wide if tall, portrait-type pictures, or a minimum of 300 pixels wide if wide, landscape-type pictures.
  4. Photos at the TOP of an article should be formatted either at:
    • Exactly 480 pixels wide with NO justification (in line with text), OR
    • 300 pixels wide RIGHT justified with text wrap.
  5. Photos WITHIN an article should be 250-300 pixels wide RIGHT justified with text wrap.
  6. Videos can be placed wherever you want them, but please use a video format that is between 375–480 pixels wide, if you can.
  7. Please set links within an article to open in a new window.
  8. Image credits should be italicized at the bottom of the post. Please include a link to the source if you can.
